Guide to LED Street Lights
How Do LED Street Lights Work?
A light made of a light-emitting diode is an example of an LED street light (LED). These pole-mounted LED lighting components are often used to illuminate shipyards, walkways, parking lots, and other outside spaces. In the regions where they are situated, these infrastructure construction equipment help to ensure safety. Some manufacturers refer to LED street lights as LED road lighting fixtures depending on their intended use.
The conventional street lights that some of us grew up seeing around our communities are being quickly replaced with LED street lights. The main reason for this trend is because LED street lights are more advantageous than their conventional equivalents. For instance, LED lights have a very long lifetime since they don’t contain filaments that may burn out easily. Environmentally friendly LED street lighting are also available. The lights don’t contain potentially dangerous substances like mercury. Additionally, LED street lighting may save you up to 70% on electricity while requiring little to no maintenance. Therefore, LED street lights are appropriate for locations where changing bulbs is difficult, expensive, or for other reasons.
What kind of LED street lights are available?
Street lights, high tower lights, and general flood lights are the three most prevalent forms of LED street lights on the market right now.
1. Street lights
Probably the most popular kind of LED street lights available now is street lights. An elevated light source that is often positioned on a long pole or lamp column is what is known as a street light or lamp. On each side of the road, street lights are often positioned in a strategic manner. They are sometimes erected within the median to light the path. The practice of hanging street lights above the road on a wire is another new installation technique. At crossroads and places in the middle of the street, street lights provide safety to drivers. Additionally, they enhance pedestrian safety, particularly at crossings.
2. High mast lights
Another typical site lamp fixture utilized for vast area illumination, often from a high mounting height, is high mast lighting. Light from high masts is used for pedestrian usage, storage, transit, and safety. Poles used to hang high mast lights typically range in height from 40 to 150 feet. Usually, there are four to sixteen light lamps put on each pole. Ports, towns, and municipal authorities often employ high mast illumination in parking lots of large events like stadiums and other sporting arenas.
3. General Flood Lights
High-powered light bulbs known as general flood lights may illuminate a huge area, generally outdoors. Flood lights are set in place. They often use a lot of power. The adoption of LED flood lights has, however, substantially reduced the amount of power needed. The lights’ extended lifetime, minimal maintenance requirements, and ability to save on energy are all contributing to their rising popularity. Also available in a variety of designs and uses are LED floodlights. They are more favored for another reason.
4. LED Lighting Replacement for HID Lamps
High-intensity discharge (HID) lights have been the primary source of lighting for our streets and other outdoor areas for a very long time. But LED lights, which are more energy-efficient, are quickly replacing HID bulbs. The new LED bulbs offer improvements over HID lamps in various areas. For instance, compared to HID bulbs, LED lighting fixtures may save up to 60% of energy. Since LED lights use electricity instead of gas (usually xenon) like HID lights do, they also need less maintenance.
Additionally, LED lights produce less pollutants than HID lights, making them more ecologically friendly. The extended lifetime of LED lights is another key factor in their replacement of HID lights. Another factor that influences people’s decision to switch from HID to LED lighting is the strong color rendering capability of LEDs. The ability to reproduce colors accurately allows LED lights to nearly mimic natural light. The more realistic portrayal of color makes it easier for drivers and pedestrians to distinguish between various things at night, increasing both their safety and the safety of other road users.

Important Factors To Take Into Account
Before buying an LED street light, keep the following items in mind.
- Power
For the same level of lighting, LED lights need less watts than conventional high-pressure sodium lamps. For instance, a 36W LED bulb may replace a 100w high-pressure sodium lamp. The equivalent of a 150w high-pressure sodium light is a 60w LED lamp. The following LED wattages are often used: 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, and 120. Be aware that normal LED illumination typically uses 60 watts or less, while lenses and mirrors often require 60 watts or more. The wattage of the LED street light you buy depends on the height of the pole as well. For example, 10w LED street lights are appropriate for poles that are 2.5 to 3 meters tall. For poles above 10 to 12 meters in height, 100w and 120w are ideal. Another aspect to take into account while determining the wattage of LED bulbs is the number of lanes. - Led Driver
LED drivers are essential to LED lighting because they carry out the labor-intensive, steadily converting ac to dc process. Only LED drivers with big resistors will outlive the light’s expected lifespan of 10 to 20 years. Before selecting an appropriate Led driver, the requirement also has to be taken into account. Your LED street light’s required functionality is a prime example. These features include thermistor (NTC), D4i, Dali, 0-10V, timed dimming, output lumen compensation (OLC), and auxiliary power supply, as well as others. Before selecting an LED street light, it is essential to learn more about these features. - LED Chips
The quality of an LED light is mostly determined by its LED chips. It has LED light’s stability and brilliance. Both elements are essential to the effectiveness of LED street lighting. There are several LED chip alternatives on the market. The most typical are 5050 and 3030. The best-known feature of 3030 LED chips is their more expensive performance. On the other side, 5050 LED chips are a better choice for an energy management contract. - Lenses and optics
Numerous optical light distributions are available with LED street lights. For greater light homogeneity, the different optical light distributions are ideal for area lighting, architectural, and road illumination. Fortunately, a number of manufacturers provide specialized solutions to clients with unique needs for light distribution. - Correlative Color Temperature (v) (CCT)
This measurement is used to show how the LED lighting source appears in relation to other colors. According to this measurement, a light source will look more white, yellow, or blue. Kelvins are used to measure CCT. Examples include the “cold” 5700K, the “neutral” 4000K, and the “warm” 2700K. - Index of Color Rendering (CRI)
One of the most important elements of lighting is CRI. It also stands for the capacity of light to faithfully (near-accurately) portray the color of things in addition to describing the quality of light. The better, the higher the CRI rating. Although a CRI of 100 is preferred, an LED street light may get by with one of around 70.
Putting in LED Lighting
Always take a few precautions before starting the installation procedure. For instance, before beginning the installation procedure, you must study the manufacturer’s instruction manual. There are many installation techniques to take into account. The following is one of them.
Considering the following actions will ensure the effective installation of LED street lights;
- After removing the outer package, take out the light and discard the packing materials.
- The fitting should then be screwed onto the street light at the appropriate tilt angle per the following procedure.
- Unbuckle the street lamp’s top lid and then remove it.
- Carefully insert the wire into the street light. On the external power cable, the M16 connection has to be tightened. Before attaching any wires, make sure that any connections to the terminal block or knife switch are solid.
- Set the light into the pole. Close the lid and clips with a snap. Check to see whether the street light is functioning properly by turning on the voltage.
Application of LED Parking Lot Lights vs. LED Street Lights
The LED street light is well recognized for its variety of uses. Here are a few illustrations:
- Expressway Lighting – For this usage, high-wattage LED street lights are employed.
- Intersection Lighting – Street and road junctions often employ this LED street lighting.
- Street Lighting – For various types of streets, various wattage lights are employed (both urban and rural).
- LED floodlights and LED area lights are often used for square illumination. They provide light so that people may converse, play, or dance for longer.
- Outdoor and Logistic Area in Industry – LED Street lights are often used to illuminate the huge areas in front of logistic areas and warehouses to aid activities that typically take place there.
- Outdoor spaces, such as lots for parking and airports.
